What Is UV Offset Printing?

UV offset printing uses ultraviolet light to cure ink immediately as the sheet comes off press. Unlike conventional offset ink, which dries through absorption and oxidation, UV ink cures before the color changes through the drying process.
At Colornet Press, all of our offset printing uses UV ink.

We consider every job color critical. UV printing gives us better control over the finished result, especially when a project runs across multiple press forms, uses demanding papers or requires strong color.

The biggest difference is what happens after the ink hits the paper.

Conventional offset ink continues to change as it dries. Some ink absorbs into the sheet and the remaining ink dries through oxidation. As this happens, color often loses density. Printers refer to this as dry back.

UV ink cures immediately.

The color we see on press stays much closer to the color of the finished piece. We are not trying to predict how much a color will change several hours after printing.

For us, this makes color management much more predictable.

Dry back becomes especially important when a project runs across several press forms.

A book, annual report or catalog might have sections printed at different times or on different press forms. Images, backgrounds and colors often cross from one form to another.

With conventional ink, the press operator has to account for how each form will look after the ink dries. Matching a crossover involves predicting how much the color will change.

UV printing removes much of this guesswork.

Because the ink cures immediately, we see the finished color while we are running the job. We match each press form to a stable target instead of trying to compensate for future dry back.

For complex color work, this gives us tighter control from the first form through the last.

It gives us the ability to produce more saturated color when the design calls for it.

We do not believe every printed piece should look brighter or more saturated. Good printing means reproducing the design correctly.

UV ink stays closer to the surface of the paper instead of continuing to absorb while it dries. This gives us more latitude when we want stronger densities, deeper color or more saturation.

When a project needs a softer or more natural appearance, we control the color accordingly.

The advantage is not simply brighter printing. It is having a wider range of color available while maintaining control over the finished result.

Uncoated paper is one of the places where UV printing makes a noticeable difference.

Conventional ink absorbs farther into an uncoated sheet. This often reduces color density and softens detail as the ink dries.

UV ink cures before the same amount of absorption occurs. More of the ink remains near the surface, helping us maintain color, detail and contrast.

You still get the texture and character of an uncoated paper, but with stronger control over the printed image.

This works especially well for annual reports, museum publications, books, catalogs, corporate communications and other projects where the paper itself is part of the design.

Coated paper benefits from UV printing too.

Conventional offset ink often needs a protective aqueous coating to help prevent marking, scuffing and other handling damage. That coating adds another layer over the printed sheet and changes how the paper feels.

Because UV ink cures immediately and has strong surface durability, many jobs do not require a protective aqueous coating.

This lets you feel the paper instead of the coating.

For projects using a premium matte, silk or other coated stock, this matters. The designer selected the paper for a reason. UV printing lets us preserve more of its original surface while still producing a durable printed piece.

It also gives us the option to add a coating when the coating itself is part of the design, rather than applying one simply to protect the ink.

We look at environmental responsibility across the entire production process.

One of the most important factors is waste.

Because UV ink cures immediately, we have better control over color during the press run. We do not need to compensate for unknown dry back or make unnecessary adjustments based on how we think the sheet will look later.

Predictable color helps reduce wasted sheets and lowers the risk of rerunning work because of color differences.

On coated stocks, eliminating an unnecessary protective aqueous coating also removes another material and production step when the job does not need it.

The sheets come off press cured. We have less concern about dry back, setoff and marking. Work moves into cutting, folding, binding and other finishing operations without waiting for conventional ink to dry.

On many coated jobs, we also avoid adding an aqueous coating solely for ink protection.

Most importantly, we gain more predictable color throughout production.

For us, UV is not an upgrade added to certain jobs. It is part of our standard offset printing process.
